Get rid of the work.

Thursday 30th March 2023

This week’s video was really tough to make.

I think that’s partly due to lack of sleep, but as well as that, sometimes things just don’t come together as easily as other times.

This is something you get used to regularly as a creator. Some projects come naturally, others are more forced.

When coming up with ideas for videos choosing what footage to use is always the hardest part for me (more on that in next week’s video...). For this week’s video that struggle was really real - and really frustrating.

I can end up feeling really burned out and unsatisfied with what I end up creating sometimes. And that’s an awful feeling.

I have to keep telling myself:

Sometimes you’ve just got to get rid of each video as best you can.

I stole this idea from Austin Kleon’s book Keep Going, and his thought’s about getting rid of each day as best you can.

The same applies to your work, too:

Not every piece of work you do has to be your favourite.

Often, I find that my most recent video, whatever it is, is my favourite one I’ve made. Because I’m always growing in my ability to put them together, so, natually, the most recent work is my best work.

But sometimes, that’s just not the case.

Someone else might think so, and that’s cool.

But I may disagree.

It’s best just to get the work out there and move on to the next thing.
